The challenge at Real Toad’s today was to take the first line of a favorite poem and use it as a jumping off point for your own poetry. There are so many wonderfule poems out there, but I finally decided to go with Mother to Son by Langston Hughes.
Well son, I’ll tell you:
I wasn’t expecting you
to enter my life,
wasn’t sure I was
ready to tackle
parenthood all alone.
***
I thought times had changed,
but I saw the looks and
heard the comments,
“I know what kind of girl she is.”
They didn’t mean I was being
responsible for my choices.
***
Waiting uncertain, scared and alone,
when you finally arrived~
perfect fingers and toes~
all the doubt disappeared,
and, though new and nervous,
I became a mother forever.
Here’s to my boy. I love you, Caleb.
Be sure to read more poems at Real Toads.
Caleb’s blessed to have a mother like you, Teresa.
I, too love this poem! You wove the view of uncertainty into the picture and love~Well Done! Great photo, too
Oh I so love this poem – AND the great photo of your son with his dog. Just lovely. I’ll bet he loved it, too!
What a beautiful loving tribute to your son’
What a great tribute!
So endearing and sincere… you’ve captured both the fear and uncertainty of becoming a parent and the complete love that overpowers when the baby comes.
Beautiful!
*sigh*
That was so beautiful…….
and so is your Boy………
(and so-while I’m on the subject-are you!)
xo
This is so sweet. Just beautiful!
I love the picture of your son with the dog, first of all. I am a dog lover. I just love all Langston Hughes poetry, but you chose the perfect one for your poem. I appreciated the honesty in your poem, the love. Your son is one lucky your man, and you are one lucky mom.
Fabulous, Teresa—a mother any son would be proud to have.
(I wrote my poem to a fictitious daughter.)
K

My Mom decided to have and keep me as well.
I was raised with lots of Love.
I miss that woman….
Delicious…..what a great tribute from a mother. Superb writing using a line from a great poet. This one made me smile the whole way through…both times.
What a wonderful celebration of motherhood, and you have chosen just the right lines from Langston Hughes to compliment what you wanted to say.
