Devotion

Devotion ain’t no emotion.

It’s the glue holding me to you.

***

Without devotion the first

drop of rain melts sugar

taking our sweetness away.

***

Devotion ain’t no emotion.

It’s a promise I made to you.

***

Without devotion the thread

stitching quilt pieces together

unravels all our warmth away.

***

Devotion ain’t no emotion.

It’s the guarantee we’ll make it through.

The challenge today at Imaginary Garden with Real Toads was to write a poem inspired by Joan Armatrading’s song Love and Affection.

  1. I loved this, Teresa.

    “Without devotion the first
    drop of rain melts sugar
taking our sweetness away.” – such perfect imagery and such truth!

  2. You’re exactly right; passion makes love possible but devotion is what makes love lasts. Many never learn that, and just swing from beginning to beginning to beginning all their life, never getting beyond the front door of the heart. – Brendan

  3. For some reason I pictured Peaches and Herb on this one….driving in my sisters old volvo to the sitters house…no heater, cold as hell. She would listen to their 8-track over and over again. When I read this I thought of that, not sure why. Lovely lyrical balance and tone. Great writing.

  4. Love the lilt in this Teresa–it echoes the feeling of the song, yet goes on into its own territory.
