The Wheel Turns

Checking in for G-Man’s Friday Flash 55.  We’re still busy, but I’ll do my best to get around to visit.

Joe and kids, Joanie and Chachi

Joe and kids, Joanie and Chachi

The wheel turns round

up and down

up and down;

The good and the bad

each take their turn,

Nature’s cycles flow:

spring and summer

fall and winter.

Never straying from the path,

the wheel turns round

up and down

up and down;

Is today the day

new life to begin

or old passing on.

Runaround Sue

Runaround Sue

Kidding is going well so far.  Fifteen girls have had babies since May 30th.  We have thirty kids and everyone is doing well.  We’ve had one instance of mastitis and one girl now had developed an infection, but we’re treating her.  This time always makes me reflect on life and death.  It’s always a bit scary during this season, as so much can go wrong trying to bring the new little ones into the world.  I’ve also got some girls getting old, and it really is a time to think about what the inevitable is.

  1. Nothing like the birthing process to make you think of the cycles of life, especially when it’s at this kind of volume Teresa. Great 55, and best of luck with your sick one.

  2. Runaround Sue! I KNOW there is nothing sweeter than holding a baby goat in one’s lap. I was lucky enough to have a few summers enjoying such a thing. Our Saanen goat had the sweetest babies.

  3. Teresa, I can’t believe you found time to craft such a reflective piece in the midst of all that you have going on. Glad the kidding is going well.

    This made me think of life cycles. The inevitability of death is always lurking, but thankfully the shadow doesn’t stay on us all the time. And then there are baby goats which have to be the most adorable critters in the world. They make the shadow recede even further. 🙂

    • My Millie goat is 9 1/2 with a virus (CAE) that is impacting her lungs, so I really have been thinking about how much I witness the full cycle here on the farm. Of course, we have two kids that have already completely stolen my heart.

  4. Teresa…
    I am so grateful that you took the time to stop Kidding around and write us a ditty!!
