The Winking Moon

The challenge at Real Toads is to write a poem using the concept of enso–the Japanese idea of the void within a circle. I’m not really confident I’ve done the topic justice, but here is my humble effort.

beneath the winking moon
wan light lost in tall grass
shrouding the silent killer
creeping upon the innocent

single fawn sleeping silently,
alone as its mother has gone
to graze upon green grass,
no sense of encroaching danger

no chance to wake and flee as
canine teeth rip into flesh
peeling away skin to feast
on rich organs bleeding life

beneath the winking moon
wan light lost in tall grass
a mother searching empty
spaces for her lost fawn
